Crucifixion with Red Sun and Moon (detail)

N.T. Lyon, Toronto

1913

A ruby red sun and moon hang above the walls of Jerusalem in the distance.

INRI is an acronym for Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum, Latin for, "Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews". Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor who condemned Jesus, ordered the ironic placard to be placed on Jesus' cross.
